Engasser-Hanson clan after 10k run before meltdown

On Sat June 15, our family ran the 10 K “Kids against Hunger” around Lake Calhoun.  I had been worrying about it for months and had been running on a treadmill to prepare.  Enclosed is the result just after my medical treatment for total body soreness and fatigue.  My 12.5 minute mile pace was pathetic even for my “age group” but it was a great family get together.  Next year I am proposing hot dog eating contest, for which I am always prepared (and train for daily).

HEALTH CARE REFORM ACT (OBAMACARE)

A recent article in the New York Times highlights some of the issues clinics face when Obamacare kicks in in 2014. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/23/us/a-louisville-clinic-races-to-adapt-to-the-health-care-overhaul.html.  There certainly be a shortage of Family Physicians and in my opinion a shortage of Orthopedic Surgeons as we deal with an enlarging aging population who hope to be more active than our parents.

There are many aspects of Obamacare that are positive (children insured to age 26, no denial for pre-existing conditions), but this government overhall has many problems which will place an undue financial burden on our children and those that have maintained healthy lifestyles. There is also a constant drumbeat of using cuts in medicare to help fund the program when many physician groups are already considering dropping medicare patients from their practice because they simply cannot afford to see them.

Furthermore the burden of care and accuracy is even greater for the physician who must often use multiple medical record systems (I use EPIC for three systems- Allina, Fairview, and CentraCare) which are different, have different passwords, do not allow me to use the same orders, and do not communicate with each other. Essentially each system has been required to “start from scratch” with customization that is great for the bottom lines of the companies that are selling the system but not for ease of physician use or improved patient care.
